Forfar’s undulating fairways are the product of flax farming. The rig and furrow pattern of ridges created by ploughing. The land was once maintained by the inhabitants of Restenneth priory which dates back to 1153.
In 1871 James Brodie persuaded Colonel Dempster of Dunnichen to permit golf over fifty acres of ground and under Brodie’s impetus, Forfar Golf Club was formed. The 18 hole course was laid out by Tom Morris of St Andrews.
