OUR PROFESSIONAL - PETER MCNIVEN
Born and brought up in Glasgow, I joined my father’s golf club Ralston in Paisley. By the time I was thirteen I played off a handicap of 13 and was off Scratch by sixteen years old.
As a junior I played for the Glasgow County Men’s Team. In 1973 I won The Ralston Club Championship, Scottish School Boys Championship and The West of Scotland Boys Championship. It was at this point I was asked to become an Assistant Professional at Gleneagles where I remained for five years. In my time there I won The Abernethy Assistants Trophy in 1976, and was runner up in the Scottish Assistants Championship in 1979. In 1977 I passed through the PGA School becoming a fully qualified Professional and was appointed Head Professional at Gourock G.C in 1979 becoming one of the youngest Professionals to hold such a post, where I remained until 1984, During this time I played many Scottish Tour Events and qualified for my European Tournament Players Card in 1981.
I have been at Forfar Golf Club since 1984 and have played in numerous tournaments winning The Ferenze, Montrose and Kilmarnock & District Pro-Ams.
During my time at Gleaneagles I met my wife Heather and we married in 1981. Our son Christopher was born in 1984 a month after I took up the post at Forfar . Our daughter Sharon followed two years later on Hogmanay 1986 .
In my time here at Forfar Golf Club we have worked at developing our Junior members coaching programme. Having started out with approximately six sessions for one group per season we now do approximately 40 x one hour coaching sessions broken down into three/four groups starting in the Easter holidays. This has produced some fine young players both now and in previous years.
I have also been working with Angus Council for around six years to promote new sports to school children who may not come from a golfing background. This again is run through the summer holidays and many of the youngsters go on to join the club.
For a number of years now I have run Ladies group lessons on a Tuesday night which has proved very popular. The group enjoy the coaching but also the company. It’s all taken quite light-hearted and I am hoping to start another group one afternoon a week shortly.
Our Senior men have also had group coaching over the past three years which again involves a fair amount of hilarity in between the more serious issue of improving their game. These lessons are about making small changes over a number of weeks to improve aspects of their game whilst having a bit of banter with others in the group.
At present there are four of us working in the pro-shop: myself, my wife Heather, Bob Sim who’s worked part time for approximately eleven years now and our newest recruit Scott McGregor who is this year’s Forfar Golf Club Champion. Scott will shortly begin his Assistant Golf Professional training with me.
